Beyond the beach

Castiglione della Pescaia, enchanted village

A lovely coastline and the vibrancy of summer

Between the blue of the sea and the green of the hills is gathered Castiglione della Pescaia. The town is a renowned and well-equipped seaside resort, famous in the Italian and international tourist scene for its beautiful beaches and rich pine forests that continue to Marina di Grosseto with the magnificent Pineta del Tombolo.

Perched on a spur of Mount Petriccio is the ancient medieval village enclosed by a formidable wall with towers, portals and a 15th-century castle. Originally east of the village stretched the ancient lake Prile, an Etruscan possession, which later became Portus Traianus under the Romans. Over the centuries, the lake dried up, and the vast swamp that formed was healed by the great reclamation work of Grand Duke Leopold.
