The dates of the 2023 seafaring palio
In 2023, the Palio Marinaro Association of Castiglione della Pescaia organized three summer palii. The youth and women's regattas will be held on July 15 and 16, with possible make-ups scheduled for July 22 and 23. The Palio dell'Assunta, however, will be run on August 20, with a possible make-up date on August 27. Wards will be able to hold training sessions from April 1.
To celebrate the centenary of the birth of writer Italo Calvino, An extraordinary palio will be held on September 10 on the Bruna River. The competition will feature a race against the clock, followed by two semi-finals and a three-way final. Mixed veteran crews will participate in this special event, which promises to be full of excitement and spectacle.
Other initiatives in 2023
The Palio Marinaro Association also introduced the trophy "Palio of Castiglione della Pescaia", based on a ranking that takes into account the results obtained in the three stakes held in the year. In addition, the role of the "ward captain", which will have duties of representing and organizing ward activities, such as festivals, citizen involvement and social gatherings.
Among the initiatives promoted by the Association, Castiglione's palii will be officially presented at a press conference at the Tuscany Region in July. In addition, the association will participate in the Maremma superpalio at the island of Giglio in September and at the Palio di Civitavecchia (April) with crews selected from the various participants in the Castiglionese palii.
To finance the activities of the districts, the Association aims to promote a strong merchandising policy, with the production of promotional materials such as polo shirts, t-shirts and bandanas. Finally, for this Christmas, the Association will participate in setting up the "Christmas Village" in Lilli's Orto del Lilli Square, with demonstrations by rowers to promote the "Palio Marinaro."
